Schengen Countries: The 29 Member States
The Schengen Area is 29 European countries without internal border checks. One Schengen visa lets a Pakistani traveller move between all of them for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Here is the full list — and how to work out which embassy you apply to.

That is 25 EU member states plus four non-EU countries — Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland — that are part of Schengen through agreements with the EU.
Which Schengen embassy should a Pakistani applicant apply to?
You do not choose freely. The rule is the same in every Schengen country:
- One destination: apply to that country.
- Several destinations: apply to the country where you will spend the most nights, or where the main purpose of your trip is (for example a conference).
- Equal nights, no main purpose: apply to the country whose external border you will cross first.
European countries that are not in Schengen
- Cyprus — in the EU but not yet a full Schengen member; it issues its own national visa.
- Ireland — in the EU, outside Schengen; Irish visa required.
- United Kingdom — outside the EU and Schengen; UK visa required.

How many countries are in the Schengen Area?
29: 25 EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Bulgaria and Romania became full members on 1 January 2025.
Is Cyprus part of Schengen?
Not yet as a full member: Cyprus is in the EU but has not lifted internal border controls, so a Schengen visa does not cover it. Cyprus issues its own visas.
Is the UK or Ireland in Schengen?
No. The United Kingdom and Ireland are outside Schengen and each requires its own visa.
Which embassy should I apply to if I visit several countries?
The country of your main destination — where you spend the most nights, or the main purpose of the trip. If the nights are equal, apply to the country whose border you cross first.
